Christmas Traditions | Blogmas Day 8

Hey everyone!

For my Blogmas post today I wanted to tell you guys about a Christmas tradition that I’ve loved for as long as I can remember. It’s  actually a Christmas Eve tradition!

Ravioli for dinner and opening one present.

This used to be my favourite part of Christmas. It was incredibly quirky and a night when my mother and were truly happy. It was always incredible, always perfect.

I think everyone needs those perfect Christmas traditions, something that they can rely on, and cherish every year when the holidays roll around.

Do any of you have quirky holiday traditions?

High school Friends | Blogmas Day 7

Hey everyone!

When you go away to university, everyone tells you that everything is going to be different. And they’re totally right.

If university is the right place for you then you’re going to know, I promise. You’re going to fall in love with your classes (and you’re probably going to hate some as well). You’re going to make new friends and you’re probably not going to talk to a ton of your old ones.

There we go I said it

NOBODY TALKS TO ALL OF THEIR OLD HIGHSCHOOL FRIENDS

I talk to two of my friends from high school. And it’s totally okay. When you get to your university you’re going to realize that some of the people you hung out with all the time were your friends out of convenience – you saw them every day right? And you took all the same classes?

Don’t worry, it’s not like they we’re real friendships, and good for you at the time, but uni is a place where you call the shots. I’ve met people who have the same interests and totally opposite interests and I’ve been able to choose exactly who I want to spend my time with! If there’s a person that I don’t really click with then GUESS WHAT?! I don’t  have to hang out with them or see them every day.

What a concept.

So just remember not to set high expectations regarding the friendships you currently have in high school; it’s going to be okay, you’ll find new and healthier friendships when you go off to school.

Get to know me! | Blogmas Day 5

Hey everyone!

I hope your Mondays weren’t too manic!  It’s late again so I think for this post I’m going to tell you eight things about myself. I want to get to know you guys, so I’ll start off by telling you a little bit more about me 🙂

  1. I’m a first year uni student in Nova Scotia, Canada. I’m taking business and so far I’m absolutely in love with it. I’ve never felt as invested and interested in my studies as I do right now.
  2. I was born in The Netherlands, but I’m not Dutch (bet you didn’t see that one coming did you?). My parents were both there on work visas so I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to get my Dutch citizenship.
  3. I love to travel. Like seriously, I have a severe case of the travel bug. I’ve been moving ever since I was born and I moved again to go to university. (P.S I can’t wait to blog when I get to London, England over the Christmas break!!).
  4. Music means a lot to me. I love to listen to music and play it! I have a confession though: I’m garbage at guitar. Give me a flute, piano, banjo, ukulele, or harmonica and I’m your girl but the second a guitar is in my hands it sounds like people are dying a very painful death.
  5. I apply makeup when I’m stressed; weird right? I don’t wear that much makeup out on a daily basis, yet somehow whenever I’m stressed I end up with a full face of makeup, winged eyeliner and all!
  6. Okay this one might seem kind of lame, but here we go: I’m a member of Girl Guides (wait… what?! Isn’t that only for 10 year olds??). This is actually my 13th year and I love it. I’m helping out in a Guide unit close to my university and I couldn’t be happier with it.
  7. Camping is my jam! There is no place I’d rather be than in the woods, roasting veggie dogs over the fire (except when my allergies act up ugh)
  8. I’m all about body modifications! Yay tattoos and piercings!! I have a septum piercing and I’m so in love with it. I also can’t wait to get tattoos later on in life!

So there you have it, eight things you didn’t know about me! Feel free to talk to me anytime, I’d love to get to know you guys better 🙂

Dealing with Exam Stress | Blogmas day 4

Hey everyone!

Since I’m in the middle of my first set of university exams I thought I’d share with you some of the ways that I’ve come up with to help me tackle them.

Keep your room tidy

This definitely doesn’t seem like something super important, but it doesn’t matter if you’re trying to study or get ready before an exam, having a messy room is bound to stress you out. Taking 20 minutes out of your studying (or procrastinating – no judgement 🙂 ) isn’t going to kill you, and it’s going to help you out in the long run.

Have a calendar

Make sure you have a calendar with all of your exams and their times on it! Missing an exam would be the worst thing so make sure you check the times and room numbers twice, maybe even three times.

Sleep

This is a super obvious one but make sure you’re getting enough sleep. A really important thing to remember is that getting a consistent amount of sleep is going to ensure that you don’t feel exhausted when you wake up.

Take breaks

Okay, it’s so important to take breaks from studying. Take a break, get a get some food, breathe a little bit, and get ready to get back into the studying zone (just make sure it’s a break, not a full day).

My Day + Free Makeup | Blogmas Day 3

Hey everyone!

Welcome to Blogmas day 3! Today it’s late so I’m just going to give you guys a quick update on what went on today.

I had my quantitative methods (aka math) exam this morning at 9am. Yeah I know, it’s terrible, who has an exam at 9am?! I was honestly so stressed for this exam but it wasn’t that bad, I had an answer for every single question which is really really good. It was a three hour exam and I was finished after 2 hours and 20 minutes, which I’m super proud about. I tend to zone out a lot during exams but I made sure I was concentrating but also taking breaks when I need them 🙂

Then I fell asleep for 7 hours. I think I’m getting a cold, so I guess I needed the sleep.

To top that very exciting (NOT) day off I got some free makeup!! My friend’s cousin works at Shoppers Drug and gets a ton of free samples and gives whatever she doesn’t want to my friend – then my friend gives what she doesn’t want to us!!

Pür Cosmetics: Day Look Eye Shadow Palette

Obviously, this is a semi used palette so I don’t have the colour hope but that’s totally okay! I love all of the colours that I have in this and I’m super excited to try using them out. All of pür cosmetics items are cruelty-free and this palette is also vegan! Yay!

Covergirl: Simply Ageless 3-1 Liquid Foundation

This foundation is going to be a little bit dark on my skin but I also mix my foundations because I haven’t been able to find one that fits my skin tone exactly. Unfortunately Covergirl is NOT cruelty free – however, since I did not purchase this product, I’d rather it be used than have it be more waste.

Also, I’m so sorry for the garbage quality of these pictures – I’ll have my camera so soon (check out my countdown widget hehe) and I’ll be able to upload super quality pictures with my content!

I’ll give you guys an update when I start using these products (I also might be going to Shoppers for some makeup tomorrow because I have a gift card so it might be a haul post ahh)

Anyways, Happy Blogmas babes!

Exciting News | BLOGMAS

I was reading a post from Rain Coates Beauty and she talked about how she’s having some writer’s block and that Blogmas is going to be her inspiration for the next month!

I have also been having some writer’s block, and just looking for some new inspiration – I really want to find things that I love blogging about because I want to share what I love with you.

SO I’M DOING BLOGMAS

I am going to be coming out with a new post every. single. day. until Christmas!

This is going to be challenging but I cannot wait to get started. It’s going to be a lot easier for me to do this once my first semester exams are done, but it’s all a part of the journey right?

Something that’s going to make blogging a lot easier and a lot more interesting is my new camera. I’m off the walls excited for this camera and the content that I have planned when I have it.

All in all, December is going to be a fantastic month and I hope you’re as excited as I am for Blogmas and new exciting content!

Dealing with Disappointing Yourself

Okay so, I just came out of one of my exams. An exam that I have been preparing for weeks and was completely prepared for. I had been getting nearly perfect in this class yet as I was working through my MS Access query for my mail merge I just couldn’t get part of it to work.

And I was sitting in that exam the worst thing for me was that I was disappointing myself. I knew how to do all of the material and I had very high expectations for myself. Honestly, disappointing yourself is one of the hardest things to come to terms with…

But I realized that not getting perfect didn’t matter. In university the A+ range is 90-100. That’s a huge… there is a ton of room to not get 100% and that’s a good thing.

Real life isn’t about 100%, seriously, no one gets everything right all the time

So I guess I just wanted to tell you guys that it’s very okay to not get 100%. It’s more than okay.

IT’S TOTALLY NORMAL

_________________________________________________________________

Why is the bar way up there ^ instead of here where the normal people are.

Why do we set the bar higher for ourselves than we should?

Sometimes we all need to step back, reevaluate, and know that as long as we’re trying our best that’s all we can do.

All in all, I hope you guys don’t have to come to this conclusion during the middle of your exams (because it took like 7 minutes out of my exam time so like learn it now hun) – please please try to learn from my lesson?

“what they don’t tell you about moving away to college”

I was scrolling through Facebook the other day and found this article by the Odyssey about what people don’t tell you about moving away to college. And you know what? I couldn’t disagree with it more.

Yes, I agree that moving away is one of the best things that has happened to me and that I’ve grown more as a person in the last 3 months than I did in grade 12. I absolutely love university and all the friends I’ve made in residence and my classes. It’s the best experience I’ve had in my entire life actually.

BUT the article is based around being homesick and crying yourself to sleep and begging your mum to come get you. Why is being homesick what makes university better for this poor person?

Yeah, I kinda miss being at home but I was also so ready to start my own life. Maybe missing home so much you cry yourself to sleep that you become your own person is a good thing..?  But scaring someone who knows that they’re ready for this into thinking they’re going to feel horrific for the first month and a half is just mean! Also, none of my friends went through this, I haven’t even seen anyone going through this.

Kudos to you if you can get through a month and a half of being miserable and continue to do well in school. Just know that this doesn’t happen to everyone – it’s okay if it does yet it’s also okay if it doesn’t. It’s totally normal to not miss your family that much when you move away for school; you’re not cold, you don’t hate your family, and you’re going to grow just as much as those other people – maybe even more.

Having your own first semester away experience is very normal so whatever you do, try to enjoy it!
